Number nine: Speak life

Proverbs 18:21a Death and life are in the power of the tongue:

I’m sure you’ve heard this popular song by Tobymac, or at least heard the phrase. This isn’t just about kindness. It’s about speaking things that are life-giving instead of death-bringing.

You might think that is overly dramatic, but it’s exactly what the verse says!

Words are so powerful! Last night Jerry and I watched Ragamuffin The story of Rich Mullins. We both recommend this amazing movie to everyone, but one of the many things that we took away from it: Our words impact our children.

It’s been said that for every negative thing a child hears, he needs to hear 20 more positive things. I’m not sure about the statistics behind that, but I can get behind the idea. The words we hear are important.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me” is a total lie! Probably one started by Satan himself.

Go out of your way to speak life-giving words to others. If you feel a death-bringing word coming up, bite your tongue. Literally, bite your tongue. Then pray for something life-giving to say. If you still can’t think of anything, say nothing at all.

Ephesians 4:29
Do not let any
unwholesome talk
come out of your mouths,
but only what is helpful for
building others up according
to their needs, that it
may benefit those who listen.

JennAbout Jenn: I’m a Christian wife to an amazing man (since 1998) and a stay-at-home-teaching mom to four special & incredible boys (born in 2004, 2005, 2007, & 2009). I’m messy and cluttered, but working on that (really, I am!). I’m a discouraged perfectionist and a classic procrastinator who probably has both ADD & Autism, so I tend to jump from topic to topic (and activity to activity) without notice. My Love Languages are Words of Affirmation and Physical Touch. I’m an INFP who enjoys friends but loves to be alone. I love getting and giving hugs, and encouragement is a Spiritual gift of mine that can too-easily be turned into the weapon of discouragement, if I’m not careful. I enjoy writing, singing, words, drawing, photography, digital creations, and reading. Oh, and pizza, tacos, and steak. Now I’m hungry. That reminds me; I eat gluten free and try to eat organic and avoid white sugar and GMOs as much as possible.  Find me on Facebook (Writer/Editor page) (Fan page), Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram.
