Here’s what Nichole says about the album:
“Before things in our lives can be resurrected and given new life, certain things must die. Before beauty blooms in spring, roots must do the hard work under the hard frozen soil of winter. Before you renovate and re-build, you tear down the parts of the structure that are weak or damaged or dangerous. Before we make, we must unmake.” Nichole Nordeman
The title song, “The Unmaking,” starts out beautiful and haunting but builds with power and strength in the chorus.
This is the unmaking / The beauty in the breaking / Had to lose myself / To find out who You are / Before each beginning / There must be an ending / Sitting in the rubble / I can see the stars
I didn’t quite understand why the tune “Not to Us” started out almost exactly like Natalie Grant’s “His Great Name.” That was a bit distracting at first. But the rest of the song was unique and stand-alone, and beautiful. Plumb’s voice is so similar to Nichole’s also. I love the lyrics of this song so much!
Let us not imagine / That we might have a hand in where the wind blows / Where grace goes / Let not any passion be for kingdoms we have fashioned in our own name
“Name” is an upbeat song Nichole’s take on living as a Christian, including the times of doubt – love the chorus:
You are still a promise / The heartbeat of God / You may have forgotten / But He has not / You are not your ashes / You are a flame / Do not ask the shadows / The Light of the world knows your name.
And the tag where she goes through all the names God has given us. Ahh. Love it!
It’s hard to claim a favorite out of such a collection, but I was very inspired by the delicate and haunting “Love You More.” Love they lyrics and the piano and violin were just gorgeous. I’m including a video of the song at the end of this post! I’ll make it a playlist. 😉
You’ve loved me since time began / You’re behind my every second chance / I love You / I’m trying to / Love You more
“Something Out Of Me” is an upbeat anthem of love for our Lord who sees something good in us even when we can’t.
By now Your love could have been long gone /
But somehow it keeps going on and on
The very first song I heard was the beautiful lullaby-like song “Slow Down.” I always thought Nichole had a great lullaby voice. 🙂 This proved it. Nichole talks about what we all have felt when our children are growing up: we just want them to stop growing up and slow down!
Slow down / Won’t you stay here a minute more / I know you want to walk through the door / But it’s all too fast / Let’s make it last a little while
As always, Nichole’s lyrics are deep and profound, her voice is ethereal and lovely, and her music is infectious. My only negative to this album is that it wasn’t a full one! But I totally forgive Nichole because I’m blessed that she chose to share these gems with us so we wouldn’t have to wait longer than necessary.

I’ve loved Nicole’s music for a long time and appreciate the chance to win!
I don’t recall hearing her music before, but I did like the song you linked to at the end, so I’d love an opportunity to win her album and get to know her music better.
There are only six songs on “The Unmaking”, but every one is killer. You have to be really broken to write these lyrics. I’m not ashamed to admit to some tears while listening to these songs. Nicole is truly one of the best songwriter/singers of our generation. May God continue to bless her.
