Introduction

Hi, I’m Kim. I’ve been married to my best friend, Jeff, since 1987. We have five children, Joshua (1992) who has been married to Alissa since 2013, Joseph (1995), Josiah (1997), Jessica (1998), and Jennifer (2001). I’m a full time stay at home, homeschooling mom.

I need to preface these parenting tips I’m posting for the rest of the month.
The fact that I firmly believe these things, and try hard to apply them, doesn’t mean that I have arrived as a mom in all these areas. They are the goals that I strive to attain. I have not reached the point of achieving all of them, all the time. My husband and children can tell you (but are probably too kind and respectful to do so), that I am far from the perfect parent. But, if I didn’t have these goals, I wouldn’t achieve them at all, so they are definitely worth striving for. 🙂 Know ahead of time that I am a Christian mom, my husband is a Christian father, our home is a Christian home, in which we raise our children to be Christians. Also please note that these are not necessarily in order of importance. The first one, below, however, is the most important.

Parenting Tip Number One

Whether age 2 or age 19, always gently and continually point your child back to Scripture.

Ask them these questions and give encouraging comments like (How the questions and encouragement is phrased would, of course, depend on age and maturity of the child):

What would God want you to do in this situation?

How would God want you to respond to the person who offended you?

What does the Bible say about this?

What does God say about what you just did/said?

What does the Bible say about honoring your parents, and did you do that when you spoke to me that tone?

Was that comment edifying?

When you were nice to that little boy at the park today, that really honored God and was a good testimony.

God is so pleased when you obey Mommy quickly.

I am so thankful that you obeyed God and told me the truth, even though it was hard.

God’s Word should trump personal experience, our feelings, and man’s opinion…every single time.

Sadly, Kim died in 2021, four weeks after discovering a rare tumor. We know she is with her Savior, and her wisdom and heritage live on in her children and grandchildren as well as in all the wise words she left behind for us.
